NSW: Millions for NSW railway safety

An extra $273 million will be pumped into the beleaguered Sydney railway system to
improve the safety and reliability of trains a year after the fatal Glenbrook disaster.

The funding package includes $14 million for the training of drivers and guards in
direct response to findings from the inquiry into the Glenbrook rail disaster.

Seven people died and 51 were injured 12 months ago when an interurban train hit the
back of the Indian Pacific tourist train in the Blue Mountains.

New South Wales Transport Minister CARL SCULLY has admitted that findings by inquiry
head Justice PETER MCINERNEY is the reason for extra training money.

Justice MCINERNEY identified 23 causes for the accident with the absence of a train
indicator board at the Penrith signal box a major cause.

The big winners in today's package are commuters on the south west suburban East Hills
line with $30 million allocated to improve services for express trains from August.
